A Fresh Chapter for the Farm Rental

A Fresh Chapter for the Farm Rental

This month has been all about transformation, and not just in the garden! Over at the farm rental, Scott has been pouring his heart into renovations, and it’s already shaping up to be something truly special. We’re keeping the charm of the original space while thoughtfully updating it to create a warm, peaceful place for guests to enjoy a front-row seat to life on the farm.

It’s been amazing to see the space take shape, with every light fixture chosen with care, every coat of paint bringing fresh life to old walls. The garden is already underway, and we’ve begun planting in the front beds with the same heirloom, seasonal approach we bring to the main farm.

The view? Unbeatable. The garden? Slowly waking up and beginning to bloom. This little house is becoming a big part of our farm story, and we can’t wait to open it up for stays in the near future. It will be a place for rest, celebration, and connection, and we hope you’ll feel right at home when you visit.

Over in the perennial beds, some of our earliest bloomers are putting on a show. Geum and iris are exploding with color and energy, adding texture and movement to the spring landscape. If these two aren’t already part of your garden, consider this your sign! Both are incredibly rewarding and bring that whimsical, heirloom charm we love so much. It’s been such a joy to see the first flush of perennial growth return to the farm.

The sweet pea tunnels are officially blooming, and it’s hard to overstate how dreamy it feels to walk through them! Every time I step inside, I'm greeted with fragrance, color, and the sense that I've stepped into a secret garden. These early blooms are just the beginning, and they’re already making their way into our first bouquets of the season. It’s a beautiful reminder of why I love growing these flowers so much.

This May also brought a few extra-special moments I won’t soon forget! A sweet Mother’s Day book signing at The Country Store, where we got to meet so many flower lovers in our community and sign copies of Sweet Pea School, and some big (fuzzy!) additions to the farm: our new Highland cows! Welcoming these big, gentle cuties has brought so much joy and life to the landscape, and watching them settle in has been a highlight of the month. They’re already a favorite sight for anyone visiting the property, and we have a feeling they’re going to join the others in becoming the unofficial mascots around here!

After weeks of digging, spacing, and planting, all 8,000 dahlias are officially in the ground, and what a sight it’s going to be! Rows upon rows of future color and beauty are now tucked into the field, and one of the best views of it all will be from the front porch of the newly renovated rental. We can already imagine guests sipping their morning coffee while watching the sun rise over a blooming sea of dahlias. It’s going to be something truly special.

Keep an eye out for more rental updates- we’ll be sharing all the behind-the-scenes as it comes together!

May Garden To-Do List:

  • Plant dahlias (A rule of thumb is to start around Mothers Day or when the lilac blooms!)

  • Direct sow zinnias, cosmos, sunflowers, and other warm-season annuals

  • Mulch perenial beds to retain moisture and suppress weeds

  • Pinch back young plants to encourage bushier growth

  • Keep a close eye on irrigation and adjust as needed
